In the hot shop, use molten glass to create sand castings and unique burn drawings. Learn to cast molten hot glass from the 2,000-degree furnace into sand relief molds to make three-dimensional sculptures and use hot glass and metal to create burned imagery on paper and wood.

Learn the ancient and intricate art of glass mosaics. Design a pattern or image with sheet glass on a wooden backing to create a stunning wall piece. Learn the basics of mosaic design, glass cutting, layout and grouting.

Mix and match this 1-day class with any of the other three options in this Mini Teen Summer Camp series.

Youth 1-Day Workshop

Learn fusing and flameworking basic techniques in this combo class for teens.

Using a solid rod of glass, an oxygen/propane torch and a steady hand, learn to apply color and manipulate molten glass using gravity and a few tools in the flame shop. Create up to five magnets from rods of clear glass and bits of colorful glass. Learn a number of techniques for shaping and personalizing the magnets.

In the kiln shop, cut and combine brilliantly colored pieces of sheet glass, glass granules and thin glass strands to create luminous suncatchers, magnets and functional dishes. Learn the basics of glass fusing and make a number of decorative and functional glass objects.

Mix and match this 1-day class with any of the other three options in this Mini Teen Summer Camp series.

Learn to blow glass at the 2,000-degree furnace. Experiment with molten glass, work with glass color and compressed air to inflate glass into different shapes and patterns.

In the cold shop, learn to use the state-of-the-art equipment and machinery to emboss glass in its solid state. Personalize your provided glasses using sandblasting, glass carving, etching, polishing, and dremeling techniques.

Learn about the exciting possibilities of Neon and Plasma in this two-night workshop. Guided by an expert instructor in the hot shop, create an airtight vessel out of molten glass that will be filled with glowing gases that respond to the human touch.  Instructors will help you gather, add color, and shape your globe on the first night. After tack fusing your creation, we will harness gravity in the kiln, draping it over a steel mold, the glass takes on the properties of fabric resulting in a lovely set of handkerchief votive candle holders.

Learn the photo resist process in order to etch cups and bottles with numbers, letters, and simple symbols. You will expose photo resist to black light; apply the resist to cups; and then blast away in the sandblaster using pressurized air and grit to etch into glass. You can bring your own cups/bottles or choose from a random assortment at Pittsburgh Glass Center.

Fast Track Flameworking is a great introduction to the flame shop and working on a torch while creating functional little treasures.  Learn to melt and manipulate Borosilicate (hard or silica and boric oxide glass) while learning the basics of heat, control and safety of molten glass. SiO2 Mixed and Mashed Up is a hands-on, after-school program specifically for students in grades 6–8. Classes meet after school once a week for 12 weeks. Spend four weeks in three different studios at PGC learning glassblowing, flameworking, and kilnforming. In the hot shop, learn the basics of gathering, blowing, and tool handling. In the flame shop, use heat and gravity to shape molten glass at a stationary bench torch. In the kiln shop, explore the world of kilnforming, including casting, fusing, and the creation of imagery using frit and powder. You can take this class more than once until you are able to jump into our high school classes.

After learning the basics of stained glass construction in our introductory and/or intermediate stained glass courses we invite you to continue the fun in open projects. Challenge yourself with a more complicated pattern or enjoy the afternoon practicing your skills while making something pretty. This is a great course for those who want to continue to explore the art of stained glass with instruction and guidance while working to their own skill level. Students will be able to choose their own pattern though the size  will be no larger than 16"x18”.

In this advanced class you are encouraged to focus on the techniques that interest you as a developing glass artist. Choose to either watch weekly technique-driven demonstrations or work on independent projects with the guidance and support of instructor. Refine basic skills and methodology as you create unique vessels and learn about a broad range of more complicated techniques including the use of solid colors, mold-blowing, and the creation of compound shapes. Content will vary by session and basic materials are provided.

Advanced Hot Glass is designed so it can be taken multiple times to improve or expand upon glass blowing skills. Students are allotted a $15 materials credit to use during this class session in order to become familiar with the procedure of purchasing materials and securing studio rental beyond class hours. Hot 2, 72 hours of hot shop experience, or instructor permission is required.

Immerse yourself in the art of pulling stringers and explore the compression technique of making colorful glass explosions. With a rod of colored glass, learn to focus the flame on a small section and slowly pull it into a spaghetti thin strand of colored glass that can be used in a number of different applications.  Emphasis will be placed on flame and hand control, building confidence with the torch, and working with color to achieve a wide range of effects that can be used to create firework-style explosions, flowers, line drawings, numbers, or letters.  Learn how to overlay color, add embellishments, wrap, rake and feather stringers then shape and manipulate compression and stringer work into marbles, pendants, or figurines.

In this class learn the basics of sculpting glass flowers out of Borosilicate glass. Working with both a bench and hand torch you will learn how to use and apply color, as well as how to shape petals, leaves, tendrils and more. A focus on solid hot seals will be covered and how ‘bridging’ can be your friend. Both group and one-on-one demonstrations will be given. Please bring a sketch book and any ideas you have. Small to medium flora will be made.

Have you ever wanted to duplicate an object in glass or create a glass replica of your own hand? Learn several casting techniques in this 10-week class. Using clay and wax, shape your own positives, such as a tile or small 3D object, and then learn to construct a mold around this positive. These molds will hold glass that will melt in the kiln and become a positive shape, creating a glass duplicate of your chosen object. You will also explore the processes of fusing and slumping. Learn how to cut pieces of flat glass and arrange them into patterns and forms to create your own suncatchers and platters! Finally, spend time in the cold shop and learn about the equipment as you finish your work. Grades 9–12.

In this 10-week program, focus on skill-building and understanding hot glass. This is a great course if you have taken a PGC workshop or are just beginning your exploration of hot glass. First, instructors teach the basic skills of gathering, blowing, and tool handling. Next, focus on making functional vessels. After that, move into the sculptural world and begin creating larger vessels and learning a variety of decorative bit-work techniques. From there, follow your imagination! A series of group projects will occur throughout the 10 weeks. Grades 9–12.

In this advanced class you are encouraged to focus on the techniques that interest you as a developing glass artist. Choose to either watch weekly technique-driven demonstrations or work on independent projects with the guidance and support of instructor. Refine basic skills and methodology as you create unique vessels and learn about a broad range of more complicated techniques including the use of solid colors, mold-blowing, and the creation of compound shapes. Content will vary by session and basic materials are provided.

Advanced Hot Glass is designed so it can be taken multiple times to improve or expand upon glass blowing skills. Students are allotted a $15 materials credit to use during this class session in order to become familiar with the procedure of purchasing materials and securing studio rental beyond class hours. Hot 2, 72 hours of hot shop experience, or instructor permission is required.

In this 8 week course we will combine clay sculpting, building molds and the heat of the kiln to create cast glass sculptures. This class will cover modeling clay, building refractory molds, glass preparation, kiln firing and resolving castings into finished works of art. We will start the class by modeling figurines inspired by real photographs of your choosing. Other projects will include pressing the clay into textures to create detail that will transfer to glass pieces and sculpting anatomy of the body. 2-Hour Workshop

Can’t decide which studio is right for you? Spend a day at PGC working with all things hot! At high temperatures, glass can be manipulated in many ways. You’ll learn three different glassmaking techniques: glassblowing at a 2,200°F furnace, flameworking at the torch, and fusing in the kiln. No experience necessary! Grades 6–12.

Whether it’s for your website, a conference where you’ll speak, an upcoming exhibition, or somewhere your work might be published, the need for a headshot is an essential tool to have in your arsenal to market yourself and your brand Wear something that feels great and shows your personality and your brand.

Pick a basic grey backdrop or add a pop of color for some creative pizzazz, and be done in just about 10 minutes. $30 includes the shoot and at least 2 high-resolution digital images delivered via email within 3 weeks.

Photography Session

In two nights, make your own distinctive goblet. On the first night, work in the hot shop, where instructors will help you gather, color, and shape molten glass into your goblet’s foot and stem. On the second night, etch and sandblast a pre-made top in a way that makes your vessel truly unique. Finally, cut, glue, and assemble your pieces so they become an amazing and functional work of art.

2-Day Workshop

Create a set of 3D illuminated glass boxes that look like wrapped gifts. Learn how to cut and shape sheet glass and assemble it with the Tiffany’s method of stained glass. Then get a lesson in how to tie the perfect bow to adorn your creations. These make a great holiday decoration and are so adorable you may choose to leave them out year round.

1-Day Workshop

In this one-day workshop, use the torch to melt and combine glass rods to make pendants that appear to encapsulate little explosions of color. Detailed demonstrations will be given on the compression technique, and instructors will provide individualized troubleshooting so that you can form several captivating pieces. Learn to apply color, make loops, and manipulate the glass to take whatever shape you desire.
