In this class, you will learn how to turn flat sheet glass into formed blown objects. We will start in the kiln shop with fusible sheet glass, and create a fused glass panel. Several panels will be made, some just as tests or samples, and some designed by you. Design considerations will be discussed on the stack up of the layers used to create the sheets and for how to accommodate the seam.

Kiln loading and firing schedules will be discussed. You will learn simple cold working techniques to prepare the pieces to be ready to “roll up” into a blown shape, sanding the edges and beveling them where the two sides will meet to form a seam.

We will then progress to the hot shop, and form that panel into a simple blown object – a cup cylinder, sphere, or simple shape. More experienced students may be able to create other forms with their pieces if desired.

The goal of this class is the blend both the kilnforming and hot glassblowing forms of glass art. The ideal student will have some experience in one or the other of the two studios, but this is not entirely necessary.

There are many different styles in mosaic, from classical to modern/abstract, from whimsical to realistic, and more. Mary loves them all, and the artistry and creativity that mosaicists bring to their pieces. But what she is known for - and what this class is about - is achieving photorealism in mosaics. That is, starting with a photo, and rendering it with sufficient fidelity such that it is the closest representation to the original image that it can be.

We will focus on the importance of (and techniques for) rendering light and shadow in a mosaic. In so many artistic mediums such as painting, photography, sculpture, and more, the difference between a really good piece and a less-successful one is how the light is treated and how it's translated into the composition.

We will also explore the role of color in mosaics, and why photorealism hinges on using the entire range of hues, tones, and values. Choice of tesserae size is critical too. We'll practice different cutting techniques to achieve depth of field as well as textural variety.

You will work from your own photos (pre-approval required). While a wide selection of glass will be available you may not find everything you need in house so you are strongly encouraged to bring your own glass supplies to the class to complete your pieces.

We will work the “direct method,” gluing stained glass directly on to a substrate. Not everyone will finish their piece during the class, depending on your speed and precision, but everyone will leave with a strategy for doing so. This is NOT a class for absolute beginners. You should have a moderate amount experience in creating mosaics and at least basic glass cutting skills.

You are the only person that is exactly like you. Fortunately, this is the key to making unique and powerful glass art. We will begin this class by taking a deep look at what draws you to this medium. There are so many wonderful qualities in glass. Aya is curious and excited to learn about which you will choose to emphasize.

Once we’ve explored glass through experimental traditional and nontraditional processes, we will then look into ourselves once more to find something unique to share. This is your accent. Anyone can learn a form or technique. With time and practice we can improve a skill, but it is only when we strive to bring forth ourselves that we find originality. Finding and gaining confidence with your unique accent is the main outcome of this class.

A variation of demonstrations will be given to offer you ideas that will help you interact with the glass medium. You will find many faces of glass in the hot shop by exhaling, inhaling, steaming, working with centrifugal force, and then finally working as a team. Then they will find the best way to express their passion.

This class is an intense focus on sculpting the hollow form. You will learn how a simple bubble of glass can be carefully manipulated to anything you can imagine. There are no secret tricks but it’s amazing what can be achieved with only a blow hose and a few key tools. Patience, persistence and determination will also be needed as failure is inevitable. You will be encouraged to push yourself beyond your comfort zone. Fear rarely produces good results. You control the glass, not vice versa. Let’s take control and have some fun.

You will learn all the basics required for a successful sculpting experience. You will also learn how to attach handles and properly prepare a bubble. From there you will be shown all the tools and techniques necessary to achieve the final product desired.

This sculptural class focuses on adapting the kilncasting process to meet the needs of the artist, rather than a singular technique. You will learn easy silicone molds, mother molds, using the lost wax method for the creation of multiples, and creating reusable molds so that you can create multiple relief casts with a single mold!

This class is designed to show you a variety of mold-making approaches with an eye toward scaling up these processes for larger works and creating multiples in cast glass sculpture. Pattern making, project planning, annealing for large castings, and more will be covered through hands-on projects, demonstrations, and lectures. You will learn how to make reliable molds for kilncasting larger works, easy silicone molds, mother molds, the use of lost wax for the creation of multiples, and creating reusable molds so that you can create multiple relief casts with a single mold!

Time will also be spent discussing cold assembly techniques, and the use of found objects to create scale and narrative in your finished works.

Throughout the course there will be presentations of relevant work, and Steven will go over firing schedules, considerations when choosing what process to use, and final presentations of your sculptures. The class will be tailored to your needs and all experience levels will benefit from this class. White is a particularly unusual color because it can be seen as the absence of color. White has the potential for unblemished purity, symbolizes calm, peace and neutrality. White can be an information free area, an empty space, a blank canvas, awaiting an imaginative impact, or a decorative execution of an idea. White provides a space where our imaginations can run free.

In this class we will be using the color white to make experimental glass shapes as 3-dimensional canvases. Unconventional blown and solid sculpted glass objects will give us the chance to explore how storytelling can determine a canvas’ shape. Taking into consideration the chronology of a tale, the visual foreground and background of a narrative will help us to create stand alone objects or actual artifacts from the story itself.

Daily discussions and demonstrations will cover the most effective technical means to arriving at the most narrative compatible shapes possible.

Due to the time constraints of this short class, the technical application of the actual image isn’t our main focus, even though it is the driving force behind the canvas’ 3-dimensional design. However, image layout will be covered. This class is primarily focused on working in teams in the hot shop, experimenting with unconventional approaches to creating cleaner more unique narrative inspired shapes, white overlays, white stuffed cups, white supio cups, white cane and white Murrine work, trouble shooting designs, and the assemblage of various garaged glass components. Although the demonstrations for this class will be focused on narrative driven canvas design and their individual components, you will not be restricted to designing work from a narrative. Anyone wanting to create within the theme “white” is welcome.

This class is intended for intermediate to advanced glassmakers, who are eager to dive into the skills and techniques associated with Venetian style goblets. You will focus not only on the how and why of each part of the goblet-making process but also on the issues, hang-ups, and critical errors that everyone encounters on the road to finely crafted stemware.

Each day will begin with a combination of discussions, illustrations, and hot shop demonstrations to serve as inspiration for your endeavors during your bench time. Starting with basic cup forms, demonstrations will gradually increase in complexity with the addition of avolios, blown feet, stems, and eventually some basic ornamentation. Special attention will be given to each individual element as they are added to build a more complete visual and technical understanding of the process.

You will spend afternoons and evenings working together on the techniques of your choosing and be expected to communicate what difficulties you encountered. These open discussions will allow demonstrations to evolve and become more tailored to the specific challenges the class is encountering. When this class is complete you will not only have a better understanding of the basic aspects of goblet-making, but also the problem solving skills necessary to continue to grow and progress long after the class has ended.

In this hot shop class, we will be learning both traditional neon techniques as well as a myriad of soft glass plasma techniques. By alternating between neon and plasma processes, we will blur the lines between these two related crafts.

We will be making lots of things! Many of the techniques we will be covering require a bit of trial and error. Some failure is inevitable when learning. By learning and experimenting with a variety of techniques, you will have plenty of tools to use when making neon and plasma ideas.

To allow for maximum time in the studio we will have neon demos in the morning, slide lectures after lunch, with plasma demos, filling, and student work time in the evening.

Our demonstrations will include basic neon tube bending, sealing on electrodes, using glass solder connections, and leak repairs. We will also be making shapes in the hot shop for reworking with torches.

Lectures include examples of both neon and plasma and where they overlap, aesthetic and functional consideration for making plasma works. We will go over rules for making both neon and plasma.

You should expect to create simple neon shapes and see firsthand the luminous differences between neon and plasma. You will also be creating sculptures using blown glass shapes in the hot shop that are turned into plasma with flameworking, coldworking and kilnworking techniques.

This class requires some basic hot glass and/or soft hollow glass flameworking skills. We plan on moving quickly and covering a lot of techniques, leaving very little time for covering glassblowing basics. We recommend that you come to class being comfortable with glassblowing or hollow soft glass flameworking fundamentals.

Go beyond neon. Learn the magic of sculpture with light in glass forms using gas plasma. Capture the Aurora Borealis in a bottle!

This class is for anyone who would like to create glass sculpture with dynamic light using a uniquely developed glass solder. Experience with neon, plasma or glass is not required but is highly recommended. The focus of the class is on the creation of suitable containers from existing ""soft"" glass objects. A uniquely developed glass solder will be demonstrated that enables even a beginner to create glass with plasma light sculptures. This glass solder allows the use of utilitarian manufactured glass items as well as assembly of studio blown, cast, and slumped glass shapes to serve as vessels for the plasma. Fused together, basic forms can be transformed into transcendent and mesmerizing glass with dynamic light sculptures.

Individual projects will be tailored to your skill level. Scientists or engineers with little to no glass experience are encouraged to experiment with plasma art in this class.

The class will serve to help enhance your experience using gas plasma light in your glass art. You will learn to prepare the glass forms for the solder, how to kiln fire them, how to create dynamic plasma effects using modified neon manifold, and the special electronics involved in plasma sculpture.

In this class we will take a deep dive into some of the most common mistakes glassblowers make. We will build from the foundations up, beginning with bench setup and ending with sending the kiln down at the end of the day.

In this course we will take a critical approach to the reasons behind the moves we use in the hot shop, seeking to disabuse the notion that the material is magic and focusing instead on the physics behind why things happen .

By the end of the two weeks we will identify old patterns of behavior that don’t serve us as makers and establish a rigorous process for evaluating the moves we want to add into our routines. This course will allow plenty of time for structured practice with lots of feedback in real time.

You will not do the best work of your life in this class (well, maybe!) but you will learn habits that will facilitate future successes.  This course is all about breaking down old habits and ways of thinking and establishing new ones that serve you better in your journey as a glass artist. We might even have some fun while doing it.
