Explore the potential of working with hot glass as a sculptural medium. This class will focus on special techniques and approaches to solid and blown sculpting that can take your sculpture to the next level. We will bring sculptures to life using a variety of torches and sculpting techniques, which include solid sculpting, inside sculpting, bit building, color application, garage use, and most importantly teamwork. Problem solving will be emphasized, and you are encouraged to bring in images of forms you are interested in recreating. Some experience is required.

Each day will begin with an instructor demo, followed by student work time. Examples of things that the instructor may demonstrate include dragons, reptiles, birds, claws, wings, and other animal forms. We will begin with solid sculpting and progress into blown, inside sculpting later in the week. Most works created will use powdered glass color. Oxygen-propane hand torches will be used and are essential to creating the work. We will also explore a variety of surface textures to create realistic fur, scales, and other textures using texture stamps.

The best part about this style of glass sculpting is the teamwork! You will work in groups of 2-3 to create your pieces. During this course, you will have the opportunity to be the gaffer and assist others.
