Mondays and Tuesdays and Wednesdays and Thursdays and Fridays

Chris Giordano has been working with glass since 2006, when he started his training in furnace glassblowing at Franklin Pierce University in New Hampshire. Since then, Chris has worked in several studios around the country and currently resides in Corning, New York where he creates works of his own as a full-time independent artist and owner of GIOSTUDIO Glass.

Chris uses simple forms to express the unique qualities of glass and its ability to capture and reflect light through form, color, and line. His artistic creations draw inspiration from traditional Venetian glassmaking techniques, incorporating elements like cane and murrine into his work. Many of his pieces feature surface engraved pattern cutting known as "Batutto."

Join us for an exciting week-long journey into “Keep Calm and Grind.” Dive into the captivating world of coldworking glass as you learn how to carve, shape, polish, and embellish glass surfaces using lathes, grit and diamond lap wheels, hand grinders, and an array of other Cold Shop equipment and tools. Gain a keen eye for detail and learn to excel in the Cold Shop.

Throughout this immersive experience, you will delve into the practice of surface texture and pattern making through demonstrations and hands-on guided practice. You’ll learn the techniques of efficient grinding and polishing, both on flat and curved surfaces. We will break down each step from a rough cut to a brilliant polished surface. The class will also cover how we can apply these practices in our own studios or at home. We will discuss the use of adhesives and take a look at examples of how they are applied to the coldworking process.

You should expect to perform repetitive tasks and be on your feet most of the class using heavy rotary tools. Some class time will be devoted to PowerPoints and short discussions. By the end of this course, you’ll leave with the solid foundation to cold work your glass like a pro!

While we encourage you to bring your own objects to work on, worry not; we’ve got you covered with blanks provided by PGC!
