Mondays and Tuesdays and Wednesdays and Thursdays and Fridays

Chris Ahalt is a glass artist specializing in flameworking. First introduced to the flame in 1998, Ahalt was an early adopter of the art form. Today he finds himself as one of the leaders in the industry which has grown tremendously into an American glass movement. Ahalt is most notable for his particular style of sculpting of the hollow form. Using primarily a single bubble of glass, Ahalt sculpts intricate animals that are strung up as balloons creating the illusion of floating. He credits much of his knowledge of glass to his time apprenticing under master flameworker, Cesare Toffolo, in Murano, Italy. It was there that Ahalt acquired many of the fundamental techniques that gave him the foundation to produce glass at the highest level.

Ahalt graduated from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design in 2000 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts.

This class is an intense focus on sculpting the hollow form. You will learn how a simple bubble of glass can be carefully manipulated into anything you can imagine. There are no secret tricks but it's amazing what can be achieved with only a blow hose and a few key tools. Patience, persistence, and determination will also be needed as failure is inevitable. You will be encouraged to push yourself beyond your comfort zone. Fear rarely produces good results. You control the glass, not vice versa. Let's take control and have some fun.

You will learn all the basics required for a successful sculpting experience. You will also learn how to attach handles and properly prepare a bubble. From there you will be shown all the tools and techniques necessary to achieve the final product desired.
