This two-week class will focus on building studio practices that harmonize both the hot shop and cold shop. Both studios are vital to the creation of our individual bodies of work, each adding layers of depth and detail to the glass sculptures we create. During our time together we will take our creations (whether they’re full objects or prep-work) back and forth between two shops as we strive to reach our ultimate glass goals.

While in the hot shop we will cover an arsenal of techniques including both Swedish and stuffed-cup color overlays, cane and murrini, and hot sculpting. Through the layering of colors, we can later carve and build patterns, which can later return to the hot shop. In the cold shop, we will use various equipment with particular attention to the flat grinder, saw, and lathe in order to cut, texture, deconstruct, rebuild, and refine our works.

Class discussions will focus on the techniques covered and the vast ways they can be applied. Take this opportunity to learn from our two studio practices and how we integrate these hot/cold techniques regarding form, texture, and pattern.
