I have no formal art background. After high school, I joined the military and then worked as an electronics technician. I discovered stained glass in 1980 and left my technician job in 1985. In 1991, I studied at Pilchuck with Boyce Lundstrom, which led me to kiln forming and creating warm glass work that I sold nationally for 25 years. During this time, I also built and restored stained glass windows, painted and etched glass, and explored other techniques. Kiln working requires attention to detail and methodology, appealing to my scientific side while allowing spontaneous artistic expression. I experiment with my own techniques, creating unconventional kiln-formed shapes. Over the years, I’ve incorporated these techniques into my work. I currently take commissions, experiment in kilns, do restorations, and create autonomous works with stained and painted glass. I’ve been teaching for about 35 years, hoping to pass on my knowledge to others.

When: , Jun 9 - Jun 13
Time: 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM
Dates:
Tuition $950.00
Instructor: Tony Serviente

The focus of this class will be to explore techniques along the edges of mainstream kiln working.  While most of the attention will be focused on three-dimensional objects there will also be an opportunity to learn about weaving glass and adding painted detail to kiln projects.

Tony has been firing glass in kilns since 1991 and sold a line of kilnformed work nationally for 25 years. He has most enjoyed developing his own techniques to satisfy his desire to experiment. The basics of kilnforming strategies will be discussed, as well as problem solving and creating kiln schedules. This class will be energetic with the possibility for making diverse projects within full days. Tony teaches without secrets and likes lots of questions and caffeine.

No experience is required, and if you have any, you’ll leave with many more directions to pursue.
